"The Arts"

What are the Arts? Actually the Arts include many different media and techniques. People have asked me in conversation, what I do for a living, which I answer that I am an Artist and Teacher. The response of the average person usually then asks: "What do you paint?" assuming that I am a painter. After all, that is what the majority of people know; and that "Artist" must be synonymous to "Painter," right? Well sometimes it's true, but more often than we might expect, there is a wide variety of types of Art that an "Artist" might create with. For example, I may work in Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Pottery, Small Metals / Jewelry, or Animation, to name a few forms of Art. Therefore, the next time we meet an Artist, we may want to ask them the question: "What type of Art do you do?" This could begin a very interesting conversation to both broaden our view of Art, and provide us with an opportunity to learn! In future articles, we will begin to explore some of these specific Art forms, and touch on other related topics.
